You\u2019re planning to send it to literary magazines (our magazine, maybe? :)). Before you hit that send button, make sure your piece is properly formatted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a new writer, perhaps you don\u2019t see the importance of formatting, but it is crucial. Take my word for it, or don\u2019t :). But you should take the word of one of the industry\u2019s gatekeepers. Literary agent Noah Lukeman, in his book <em>The First Five Pages<\/em>, mentioned many reasons a manuscript might end up in the trash bin before being read. You guessed it: poor presentation is the main one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s inevitably the presentation that is looked at before all else in a manuscript, that can signal unprofessionalism to an agent or editor.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite> (The First Five Pages, Noah Lukeman)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> So, what will happen if you don\u2019t follow the standard manuscript format? After all, it\u2019s the story that matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, maybe for you. But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It\u2019s an added cost to the publisher you\u2019ve approached.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s extra work for the exhausted editor or agent who has to go through a pile of stories that is higher than their more exciting TBR.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It indicates that you didn\u2019t read the submission guidelines, or you can\u2019t follow directions. Which might suggest you\u2019re a difficult person to work with.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike with published or established authors, agents and publishers read your work looking for a reason to reject it. Don\u2019t give them one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a shame that small\u2014and easily preventable\u2014surface errors can be determinants for an entire book, can prematurely prevent you from being taken seriously. On the other hand, these smaller signs may be indicative of a certain broader sensitivity: they may signal a carelessness, sloppiness, ignorance or defiance of the industry\u2019s standards; that the writer doesn\u2019t care enough to do the minimum amount of research to make a manuscript industry presentable. Often when a writer\u2019s presentation is careless, his writing is too.\u201d <\/p>\n<cite>(The First Five Pages, Noah Lukeman)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t be that writer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sticking to industry standards will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make your story look professional. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make it easy to read. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prevent poor presentation from working against it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But first, if the magazine or the publisher you\u2019re approaching has specific preferences, make sure you adjust your formatting accordingly. If no specifications are mentioned, then format your story following industry standards:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A short story doesn\u2019t require a separate title page<\/strong> (unlike a novel manuscript).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t include a header on the first page<\/strong> of your story.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the <strong>upper left corner of the first page<\/strong>, include your <strong>real name<\/strong>, <strong>email<\/strong> address, and <strong>other contact information<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>On the upper right corner of the first page<\/strong>, include the <strong>approximate word count<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Center the title<\/strong> of your story about a <strong>third of the way down the page<\/strong> with the <strong>byline underneath it <\/strong>(your name, or pen name, preceded by <em>by<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Begin the body of your story a few lines below the byline.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In the header, on the top right corner of each page<\/strong>, include your <strong>last name\/story title\/page number<\/strong> (separated by a slash (\/)).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The margins<\/strong> on all sides of the document should be set to <strong>2.5 cm (1 inch)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The text<\/strong> should be <strong>aligned to the left<\/strong>, not justified. Leave the right side ragged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The font<\/strong> should be <strong>12-point Times New Roman<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The text<\/strong> should be in <strong>black on a white background<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The text<\/strong> should be <strong>double-spaced.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The first line of each paragraph<\/strong> should be <strong>indented by 1.25 cm (0.5 inches)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t add <strong>additional spaces between paragraphs <\/strong>(including dialogue).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The space <strong>after a period<\/strong>, or any other punctuation mark, should be<strong> single-spaced<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Insert <strong>scene breaks<\/strong> instead of skipping lines with the Enter key when your story has a jump in time or location. <strong>Add a typographical symbol<\/strong> like a <strong>hash mark (#) or three asterisks (***)<\/strong> in the <strong>center of the blank line<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Never underline<\/strong> text in your manuscript. Instead, <strong>use italics<\/strong> when needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You don&#8217;t need an end marker<\/strong>, but you may center <strong>\u201cEND\u201d<\/strong> a couple of lines below the final sentence to make it clear that no pages are missing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There you have it. Now, if your story still gets rejected, it\u2019s surely because of your bad writing. Haha, kidding!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seriously, though, if you get rejected, it wouldn\u2019t be because of the formatting. It could be that your piece didn\u2019t speak to them, which is something beyond your control. It\u2019s totally fine. You can\u2019t expect everyone to like your writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if your writing needs improvement, you can learn\u2014you <em>should<\/em> learn.
